Giant book sale benefits Columbia County mobile library

The Columbia County Traveling Library is having its semi-annual giant book sale. They travel to townships in Columbia County, where there isn't a traditional walk-in

SCOTT TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Thousands of books are inside the Light Street United Methodist Church's Lighthouse Community Hall in Scott Township. The Columbia County Traveling Library is having its spring giant book sale.

"We've had a steady flow of people coming in purchasing lots of stuff. We have many home-schooled families that come and really take advantage of all the wonderful resources to be able to supply their home libraries," said Amanda Noblit, Director of the Columbia County Traveling Library.

Books donated by readers in the community throughout the year are available at the sale. They are discounted from 50 cents to $2.

"We do charge a little bit more for anything that's in like new condition, but for the most part, it's a steal considering a normal hardcover goes for $17 to $20 anymore in the stores, said Noblit.

That's why Louise Hartman from Mount Carmel came to the sale.

"I'm an avid reader, as are both of my sisters, and I'm here with another friend who's an avid reader, so this is a great bargain for people, and we don't really have a big bookstore in the area, so it's wonderful," said Hartman.

The Columbia County Traveling Library aims to raise $10,000. All proceeds will go towards purchasing new library resources.

"Whether that's print resources, digital resources, so they go onto the shelves for the community to be able to borrow, whether at the book mobile or at any of our walk-in spaces," added Noblit.

The bookmobile visits 25 townships in Columbia County without traditional walk-in spaces, which is why the giant book sale is crucial.

"We have a high demand; we've been seeing a lot more usage of the library with our recent partnership with the Bloomsburg Public Library, so it's just been incredible to be able to offer and meet all of the demand that is in Columbia County," said Noblit.

The giant book sale runs until Saturday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the Light Street United Methodist Church's Lighthouse Community Hall. Those who come to the sale can also donate used books. The next book sale will be held in November.
