MAHONING TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- A former corrections officer accused of raping several women in central Pennsylvania has been charged with new crimes.

John Kurtz was arraigned Friday morning on attempted rape and attempted kidnapping charges.

Kurtz is also being investigated in crimes dating back to 1994.

These latest charges accuse Kurtz of breaking into a woman's home while she was sleeping, tying her up, but then cutting her loose.

State police say Kurtz also admitted to breaking into a woman's basement multiple times. He brought zip ties and other items to use for kidnapping but could not get into her house.

According to court papers, troopers used John Kurtz's cigarette butts to match DNA left on the rape victims.

He brought some of the victims to a campsite on Hemlock Road near Catawissa.

State police say Kurtz admitted to the kidnappings and rapes.

The victims in this case say they think believe Kurtz took pictures and possibly videos during the attacks.

Kurtz is locked up in the Centre County Prison on $2 million bail. State police tell Newswatch 16 this case is still open and under investigation.

Kurtz, who once worked as a corrections officer at SCI Coal Township near Shamokin, was arrested in December and charged with raping three women in Northumberland, Columbia and Montour Counties.
