State police: Man dies after experiment with explosives in Carbon County

The apparent explosion happened early Wednesday in a home near Lehighton.

LEHIGHTON, Pa. — A man has died after an apparent explosion at a home in Carbon County.

State police were called to a home on Franklin Heights Road in Franklin Township, near Lehighton, around 2:50 a.m. Wednesday after reports of a possible explosion.

Troopers found Steve Sensinger, 58, dead inside a detached garage with indications of an explosion and fire.

Investigators believe the victim was experimenting with explosives, which caused the accidental blast, resulting in fatal injuries.

Neighbors tell Newswatch 16 Sensinger lived alone with his dog and would often go out to the garage to work on projects.

They say he will be missed in the neighborhood.

"He was a nice guy, in my opinion," Ernie Heckman said. "He would help people out. Snowstorm two weeks ago, he was up here with his tractor with his plow. He helped everybody up here, and he pretty much kept to himself."

"I guess that one just got the best of him there. You know, it's a shame, it's a shame, really good guy."

The Pennsylvania State Police Troop N fire marshal unit, along with the PSP Lehighton criminal investigation unit, is conducting the investigation.
