Coroner rules suicide in death investigation that closed Carbon County road

A stretch of Route 534 was shut down for hours near the I-80 Interchange in Kidder Township Saturday evening.

CARBON COUNTY, Pa. — A death investigation that closed a stretch of road in Carbon County for hours Saturday night was a suicide, the county Coroner's Office said Sunday.

A 77-year-old man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Coroner Mark Smith said. His death was determined to be a suicide.

The Luzerne County man died in Kidder Township's state game lands. The state police closed a stretch of Route 534 near the Interstate 80 interchange for hours while they worked.

The road reopened just before 8 p.m. Smith officially pronounced the victim dead a few minutes later.
