Neighbors helping neighbors in Palmerton

After 13 inches of snow fell in Carbon County, it was a day full of work for some and a day full of play for others.

PALMERTON, Pa. — The snow blowers were hard at work Tuesday morning. Shane Negley of Palmerton got an early start clearing the snow from his driveway and for some of his elderly neighbors on Columbia Avenue.

"When I first saw the forecast for 1-3 inches, I was like, oh okay, then it went up a bit, then it went up and bit, so I took a vacation day from work, and I am glad I did," said Negley.

Negley says every time it snows, the whole neighborhood helps each other out. But this snowstorm brought a little more snow than he expected.

"I left the dog out this morning. She's a black lab, and the snow was up to her belly, so we measured it. In our backyard it was 12-13 inches, so I figured better get out and start helping the neighborhood," said Negley.

Over on Princeton Avenue, Newswatch 16 found more people shoveling.

"I thought it was easier than the storm in January, it's much lighter, especially at the driveway where the plows are, but it was pretty easy." said Russell Derrick of Palmerton.

"It's not too bad, the top is nice and soft and the bottom is a little wet but it's nice that the sun will melt the bottom stuff so it's not so bad ," said Alex Orr of Palmerton.

Alex Orr had an extra set of hands helping him with clean up. His five-year-old daughter Olivia says it's a pretty easy job that's not too exhausting.

"For me it's not, it's fun for me," said Orr.

After all of that shoveling, it's playtime for the neighborhood kids. Which brings back a lot of memories for the dads, all while creating new snow day memories.

"It's cool because me and him grew up together as friends and played in the snow together; now our kids are doing it, so it is cool to have that memory and be off from the snow," said Derrick.

"It's a very cool experience, I love big snow days like this, especially when you don't have to be out and traveling and stuff like that," said Austin Cseh.
