Fresh powder packs 'em in for Presidents Day

Newswatch 16's Amanda Eustice stopped by Blue Mountain Ski Area in Carbon County, which was sold out all weekend.

CARBON COUNTY, Pa. — The snow guns were on as skiers and snowboards packed the slopes at Blue Mountain near Palmerton for Presidents Day.

Nick Weis of New Jersey thought it was time to dust off this costume "in honor of George Washington, our very first president."

Weis was out enjoying the holiday weekend with his buddies.

"Enjoying Presidents Day off. My birthday is tomorrow, so I thought I'd come to celebrate with a group of my friends and just have a good time snowboarding on the mountain."

Ava Genzler was happy she was hitting the slope with her dad instead of being in school.

"It's amazing, just listening to a teacher, being out in the ice."

It was a sold-out weekend for both skiing and snow tubing on the mountain, with all 40 trails open.

"We see lots of crowds every year during this time, and then the fresh snow that came this week into the weekend was really the recipe for a lot of skiers coming out," said Blue Mountain's Ashley Seier.

That was the case for the Patel family from New Jersey.

"Not enough snow. The snow just started coming the last couple of weeks, so we live near Mountain Creek in New Jersey, so we go there more often. It's just the conditions haven't been that great," Ak Patel said.

But conditions on the mountain weren't bad at all.

"I think it's a little too icy for me, but overall pretty good, still really fun, because once you fall, you wish it wasn't icy, but overall it's pretty good," Genzler said.

"There's about a 36-to-40-inch base out there, so that's going to stick around for a while. You can see we're still making snow, and we're going to keep making snow every chance we get," Seier said.

The resort hopes the ski and snowboarding season will last until the end of March.
