AVOCA -- Across the Northeast, airlines have canceled thousands of flights because of the winter storm.

"We were scheduled for Philly and because of the weather, we decided to shift over to Charlotte. It wasn't calling for much weather there, maybe an inch of snow. With all the ice in Charlotte, we had to switch from American Airlines to Delta,” said Chris Scoda of Pittston.

At the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International airport, Newswatch 16 found travelers grateful to have arrived home just ahead of the storm.

"We were so lucky because we were actually watching Allegiant this morning wondering whether our plane was going to get canceled. All of Charlotte was totally no in, no out. We were able to get out. There were no delays, none at all,” said Anne Mullen of Scranton.

"I was worried about picking up my friend because I thought all the flights in the northeast were going to get canceled,” said Pat Weller of Old Forge.

There have been changes made on the roadways because of the storm. The turnpike has reduced some speed limits to 45 miles per hour in certain areas. Certain trucks are banned from driving on those sections of the turnpike during the weather emergency.

"My plan was to get on the road and get home safe and sound by the early evening,” laughed Susan Clark of New Jersey.

Clark was leaving her New Jersey home, ahead of the storm, for a trip to New York State. She plans to return Sunday and expects to find a lot of snow.

"I got a new snow blower that I just learned to use. Hopefully, you know, I can crank that up and get it cleared for work on Monday."

Temporary speed restrictions were put into effect on highways in our area including Interstate 81 between exits 151 (I-80) and 89 (I-78) and on the turnpike from Mid County (Exit 20) to Lehigh Valley (Exit 56).
