MOOSIC --- Friday morning, firefighters were on hand at WNEP-TV in Moosic for Operation Save A Life.

The goal is to provide free smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors to folks who need them.

According to FEMA, more than 3,000 people are killed each year in fire and carbon monoxide poisoning incidents.

But firefighters say it's about more than just getting  smoke alarms.

"Our responsiblity is to make sure they don't just get a smoke alarm. They keep it up to date, they change the batteries and they have a working smoke alarms," said Wilkes-Barre Fire Chief Jay Delaney.

About 12,000 smoke alarms were donated to local firefighters at Friday's event which will then be donated to people around the region.

WNEP-TV would like to thank fire protection manufacturer Kidde for their generous donation of over 100,000 smoke alarms to operation save a life since 2003.  Visit their website for more information on how to keep your home safe from fire.
