Scranton, the place to retire

The electric city is ranked the fourth best place in the U.S. to retire and seniors understand why.

LACKAWANNA COUNTY, Pa. — Beating out cities in states like Florida and North Carolina, Scranton Pennsylvania now ranks fourth, according to US News and World Report as one of the best places to retire in 2024.

"We interact pretty regularly with seniors in this community and we receive a lot of positive feedback from them about their experiences," said Lisa Durkin, President and CEO United Neighborhood Centers.

The organization services hundreds of seniors throughout Lackawanna county.

Including Paul Hurlburt, one of the many retirees who lives at Webster Towers in Scranton's hill section.

"Pennsylvania's got a lot to offer," said Hurlburt. "It's got a lot of activities the Webster, is the Primo spot to retire at."

Originally from upstate New York, Hurlburt retired back in 2017 and moved to Pennsylvania for the areas health care benefits and rich history.

"I found out that the area has a lot to do with trains...I like the baseball team that's here even though it's the Yankee team, I'm a Mets fan," said Hurlburt. "It's just a wonderful place I can't say enough good things about it."

"We started looking around for something and we found this place here 10 years, and I love it. I love all these people here," said Webster Tower resident John Sawko.

He's lived in Scranton, his whole life and says the accessibility that the area offers seniors is a huge benefit.

So is the weather at least for him.

"I like to change the weather, I like the nice snow you know. But not too much snow," said Sawko.

The only other cities ahead of Scranton were also in Pennsylvania, number one was Harrisburg, two was Reading and three was Lancaster.
