Update: Man arrested following shooting

An active shooter situation in Hazleton ended with one in custody.

HAZLETON, Pa. — Police say one person is in custody, and another was taken to the hospital following a shooting in Hazleton.

The police chief says shots were fired around 8:30 p.m. on Thursday along West 11th and Alter Street.

Investigators said a verbal argument began which then escalated when Nino Vasquez Gomez, 26, of Hazleton pulled out a rifle and began shooting, ultimately striking the victim, a 21-year-old man.

"Pulled out a gun, he shot him like boom, boom, boom. I thought it was fireworks at first. Then I saw the guy falling down sideways. Obviously, everyone scattered and took off, and the cops were here. It was crazy, but it's like this every Thursday and Saturday night," Cindy Rogoseky recalled.

Gomez was charged with aggravated assault and one count of recklessly endangering another person.
