HONESDALE -- Hundreds of people came out Sunday to race their snowmobiles in Wayne County.

Snowmobile enthusiasts took part in drag races on both land and water. All to help raise money for the NEPA Snow Trails Organization.

Most say they came out to feel the adrenaline rush.

It's not every day you see snowmobilers revving their engines in 80 degree weather, but snowmobile enthusiasts say the white stuff is not needed to have a great time. Land and water will do just fine.

Snowmobilers say it may look easy to ride on water. But there is a lot you have to keep in mind.

"Oh yes, you can sink, if you don't go fast enough and you can't go too fast because you have to slow up before you get to the other side," said Debra Jerbasio of Hawley.

This is the 8th year for the event that benefits the NEPA Snow Trails Association.

Riders spend the day drag racing across land and many also hit the pond, going at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour.

Organizers say the hundreds of people come from all over for the snowmobile event.

"People have been waiting since last year to do this, they come from a long way," said property owner Heath Crum. "People from Allentown, New Jersey, as faraway as New York, everybody just shows up to have fun."

Riders pay a fee of $20 and have access to several trails, the pond and drag races all day long.

Money raised will help the NEPA Snow Trails Association take care of their trails.

"We have an active group that does maintenance, we maintain the trails, develop new trails, also during the summer months, it is ongoing of doing maintenance of over 250 miles of trails," said Dan Pregnar, president of NEPA Snow Trails Association.

And enthusiasts say, this event will help keep them busy for a few months, until the white stuff hits the ground.
