CANAAN TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- A former campaign chairman for President Donald Trump, sentenced last month to federal prison, has been transferred to a facility in Wayne County.

Paul Manafort is now being housed in the minimum security section at USP Canaan near Waymart.

Manafort was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison last month as part of a plea deal with special counsel Robert Mueller on federal conspiracy, money laundering, and other charges.

According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Manafort, 70, will be one of about 110 inmates in the prison's satellite camp, which largely houses white-collar criminals. That separates Manafort from more than 1,000 inmates housed in the high-security part of the prison. That section is where convicted killer and gang member Jessie Con-ui stabbed and killed federal Correctional Officer Eric Williams of Nanticoke in 2013.

The one-time Trump campaign chairman still faces mortgage fraud and conspiracy charges in New York State.

He is scheduled to be released on Christmas Day 2024.

Manafort is not the only high-profile white-collar criminal to serve time at USP Canaan.

Timothy Rigas was an executive at the Pittsburgh-based cable TV company Adelphia Communications when he and his father John Rigas were convicted in 2004 for bank fraud.

John Rigas finished his term in 2016. Timothy Rigas remains in the same satellite camp at the facility where Manafort is now locked up.

*An earlier version of this story identified Paul Manafort as a Trump campaign adviser. Manafort served as the Trump campaign chairman between May 2016 and August 2016 after joining the campaign in March 2016.
