Call for change in Snyder County

The national outcry after the death of George Floyd at the hands of four police officers is intensifying.

SELINSGROVE, Pa. — A group of demonstrators, calling for an end to police violence, gathered Monday in Snyder County.

This protest began around noon at the intersection of Route 522 and Market Street in Selinsgrove.

Organizers say this protest is being held to bring awareness to police brutality against the black community.

People lined up in front of CVS, many of them dressed in black. Some held signs in honor of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement.

Organizers stress that this is a peaceful protest, and no violence will be tolerated.

"It's a problem everywhere with racism and with treating the black community like they're less than, and that's not right," Lauryn Longacre.

Lauryn Longacre and Isabella Moles organized the protest. They are seniors at Susquehanna University.

"Really heartbreaking when I hear my friends say things like, 'I feel safer with the riots outside of my building in New York then they do here on campus,'" Isabella Moles said.

Organizers stress this is a peaceful protest, and no violence will be tolerated.

Drivers had mixed reactions about the protesters.

Organizers were motivated to protest after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, saying racism is not just in big cities.

"It's still a prevalent issue in our society, especially in rural Pennsylvania," Moles said.

"Just knowing that is still a thing here and knowing that people just overlook it. There's never any punishment," Longacre added.

This protest is scheduled to run until 6 p.m. Organizers say it is scheduled during this time to accommodate people who are on lunch break and who are coming home from work.
