MAHANOY TOWNSHIP – Drought conditions have led to water restrictions in part of Schuylkill County.

Customers of the Mahanoy Township Water Authority are told to stop all non-essential water use.

The restricted area includes Mahanoy Township, Mahanoy City, and Gilberton.

Customers are asked to reduce water consumption by 15 percent.

Prohibited uses include watering of lawns, outdoor gardens, landscaped areas, trees, shrubs, and other outdoor plants; washing of automobiles and trucks; washing of streets, driveways, and sidewalks; serving water in restaurants, clubs or eating places unless specifically requested by the individual; and ornamental water use.

The authority said reservoir levels are below 50 percent capacity.
