MILTON -- Weis Markets' distribution center in Milton is already over one million square feet, but soon it will be even bigger. The company broke ground on an expansion project at the center.

"It's over 100,000 square feet of refrigerated space for dairy products and meat products and temperature sensitive items that will allow us to consolidate some facilities," Jonathan Weis said.

Weis Markets currently distributes its dairy and meat products out of Milton and Sunbury, but with this expansion, all that distribution will move to Milton. Weis is not sure yet how many new workers will be hired, but officials say the move will reduce traffic and bring in more energy-efficient equipment.

"It is projected to cut a lot of carbon burn in the form of diesel fuel used going between our current Sunbury and Milton facilities," Weis said.

The expansion isn't just energy-efficient. Employees tell Newswatch 16 it will make their jobs more efficient.

"The expansion that we're going to be having certainly is going to be opening a lot of opportunities as far as other jobs. Receiving, hauling, things like that," Doug Walter said.

"We have a lot of distribution in Sunbury as well here in Milton and that's going to consolidate all that distribution into one facility," Greg Pysher said.

A representative says the project costs around $12 million. Weis says he hopes to have the expanded distribution center up and running by next February.
