Pregnant driver charged with DUI after crash in Northumberland County

Police say Jennifer Garzelli had a blood-alcohol level of .385 and tested positive for marijuana.

MOUNT CARMEL, Pa. — Police have charged a woman after an alleged drunk driving incident in Northumberland County in March.

According to police, Jennifer Garzelli had a blood-alcohol level of .385 percent and marijuana in her system. She is also pregnant with twins.

A witness told police Garzelli was seen driving away from a bar on South Market Street.

Police say she went to a nearby convenience store and tried to buy beer and food but was refused.

Video from a home security camera shows the moment Garzelli crashed into two houses on Orange Street in Mount Carmel before driving away.

"Hit two other parked vehicles, and then between there and where the vehicle came to rest, struck street signs and then also drove over a concrete wall," said Mount Carmel Police Chief Chris Buhay.

Garzelli faces a long list of charges, including driving under the influence.

When police found her, she was on the ground beside her SUV and could not stand up. Garzelli told police she was at a bar and drank 12 shots of vodka and bourbon. Police also found open bottles of vodka in her vehicle.

Chief Buhay says he does not see a blood-alcohol level of .385 percent every day.

"That's not the average person's drinking. That's on a higher level. It's a comatose death level for some people, so that's a lot of alcohol."

Chief Buhay later found out Garzelli is pregnant with twins.

Garzelli was taken to the Northumberland County Prison but did post bail. She is scheduled to appear in court later this month.

Newswatch 16 has done several stories with Garzelli and her family while they were raising money for their baby, who has heart problems.
