Update: One dead, two injured in Luzerne County crash

The crash Tuesday afternoon slowed traffic on the highway for hours.

LUZERNE COUNTY, Pa. — UPDATE 10:40 p.m.:

One person is dead, and two are seriously injured following a wreck Tuesday afternoon in Luzerne County.

Officials say a vehicle was driving north along Interstate 81 in Pittston Township.

The driver lost control of the vehicle and spun around while still in the northbound lane.

The vehicle then went through the center median and flipped before stopping in the southbound lanes.

The driver, Jayda Barber of Wilkes-Barre, and passenger Santalena Lundy of Wilkes-barre were both seriously injured.

Another passenger, 18-year-old Zyier Spruell of Wilkes-Barre, died.

The Luzerne County Coroner is scheduled to perform an autopsy Wednesday to determine the cause of death.

UPDATE 9:10 p.m.:

A stretch of Interstate 81 South between the Dupont and Bear Creek exits was closed throughout the evening rush house.

It reopened just before 8:00 Tuesday evening.

Interstate 81 south in Luzerne County between Exit 175B (Route 315 North/Dupont) to Exit 170 (Bear Creek/Wilkes-Barre) is closed due to a crash.

Traffic is being detoured.

There is no word from PennDOT on how long the highway will be closed.
