SALEM TOWNSHIP -- Police in Luzerne County are investigating an apparent murder-suicide near Berwick.

Police found two people dead after the family called authorities to check on them after a fight.

Police say they are investigating a gruesome crime scene that happened in the 200 block of Bowers Road in Salem Township.

Police believe a domestic dispute involving a gun may have led to the apparent murder-suicide of a man and woman who had an on-and-off relationship.

Authorities say they found the bodies of Shawn Kishbaugh, 28, and Jennifer Bower, 35, after family who lives close by heard of a fight at the home and called police to check on them.

Police responded minutes later, but by the time they arrived, they said the two were dead.

Authorities said Kishbaugh shot Bower and then himself.

"It's freaky. It's scary, something like that this close."

Karen Earlande lives only a few blocks away and can't believe it was so close to home.

"You hear about it other places, not here."

"I can't imagine anybody doing that," said Beverly Horman.

She's lived in Salem Township for almost 80 years and can't remember anything like a murder-suicide ever happening there.

"I'm just surprised to hear something like that would go on around here."

Police believe this is an isolated incident and the public aren't in danger, but for some people who live in Salem Township, the tragic event is forcing them to collect their thoughts, sending prayers for the victims' families.

"It's sad. It really is," said Earlande.
