FOSTER TOWNSHIP -- A crash in Luzerne County shut down a part of Interstate 80.

The crash happened just after 9 a.m. Monday on Interstate 80 west near White Haven.

State police said multiple vehicles were involved in the crash which occurred in a construction area. Troopers said six vehicles were stopped for a separate minor crash. A dump truck driver did not realize the vehicles were stopped and hit the back of one, causing a chain-reaction crash.

Both lanes of Interstate 80 west were closed between the White Haven exit (273) and the Mountain Top exit (262).

Many people were left sitting in bumper to bumper traffic for hours.

"We were heading home and we really did not expect to be stuck in that traffic for that amount of time," Marlene Calcaterra from Michigan.

Traffic was being detoured off the interstate at the White Haven exit.

"We were never really caught in the traffic, but we had to go way out of our way. We had to go around it," said Kevin Smith of Ohio.

Officials said the traffic on Route 940 was backed up about seven miles. They said the traffic was steady throughout the day.

State police said several people involved in the crash were flown to the hospital. Their injuries were listed from moderate to severe.

One lane of Interstate 80 west reopened just after 5 p.m.
