SCRANTON -- Classes in Scranton are cancelled because teachers are hitting the picket lines.
The Scranton School district is one of the larger districts in our area with approximately nine hundred teachers and ten thousand students.
Scranton High School will be empty Monday, the same goes for the other 15 schools in the district. Teachers went on strike at the end of classes Friday. They said they will be on the picket line today, instead of in classes.
Teachers were busy Friday evening, handing out flyers at the Scranton High, Scranton Prep football game. Union members said the issues keeping both sides apart include money, the cost of health care insurance, and class size.
Classes are not the only thing in Scranton affected by the strike.
According to the school district's web site, "school activities and sports programs will be suspended until the strike ends." The football game against Scranton Prep, will apparently be the last until the teachers walkout comes to an end.
The school district's web site also said administration is waiting for a response from the union, to its latest contract proposal.
The last strike Scranton was 17 years ago. Union members believe they can stay on the picket line, as long as three weeks.
