Preparing your car for summer travel

Many people are gearing up to take much-needed vacations, but before you go, experts are encouraging you to make sure your ride is road-trip ready.

MOOSIC, Pa. — If you haven't taken a big trip in a while, it's a good idea to make sure your vehicle is safe and ready to travel because nothing can ruin your summer vacation faster than having your vehicle break down.

"Now that things are opening up, people and restrictions are coming off. People are traveling more now than obviously, they did last year," said Pete Banko, the district manager at Jack Williams Tire and Auto.

Banko tells Newswatch 16 they are seeing customers come back with estimates that were done last year, and because fewer people were traveling, they waited to get their ride serviced.

"Now they're coming back, getting those repairs done," Banko said. "They're also doing things for their cars that they may have not done in the past. Making sure that their tires and the brakes are all up to speed because they are traveling to see family and friends now. They are really also going back to work, and a lot of people were working from home."

Employees at Jack Williams Tire and Auto in Moosic are offering some tips on how to make sure your vehicle is road trip ready.

"I would recommend customers check their brakes, check tires, check your tire pressures, all safety-related items, their wipers," Banko said. "Topping off all your fluids, making sure your fluids are all good. Cabin filter, air filter, AC is really important coming into this time of the year. You want to make sure that AC is working properly."

Don't forget to replenish emergency kit supplies.

Service techs say that while it's important to check your vehicle before your trip, you should also have a backup plan if something happens.
