SCRANTON -- It wasn't your traditional ribbon cutting. In fact, government officials and organizers celebrated the opening of the Co-op Farmers Market in Scranton by cutting a fennel.

People were already shopping for fresh squash, apples, peppers, and other vegetables and all the other foods the 20 vendors had to offer.

"First-day farmers market is great," said Joanna Davis of Scranton. "I got my fried green tomatoes, my oatmeal raisin cookies, and my oil scents to smell the house out real nice."

While others were only interested in sweets.

"These things are the best whoopie pies ever," said Isaac Kress.

The Co-op Farmers Market is open every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday until Thanksgiving and folks say they'll be here.

"I heard it was open and I just had to get here to get some fresh vegetables and fruits, and get started on a good summer since there's plenty of good things to get, and prices are great, and it's nice and fresh."

Grovedale Winery, which serves a variety of wines made in Pennsylvania was at the farmers market for the second year in a row.

Dawn Teeter says she enjoys talking to different people. She came all the way from Towanda.

"A lot of people like it so we'll be coming all the time. This is the best I'd say, the biggest, a lot of people, a lot of different varieties of people."
