LACKAWANNA COUNTY -- It's less than 24 hours till Christmas, maybe you're finishing up your shopping, or getting ready to head out to Grandma's. Newswatch 16's Carmella Mataloni is in Lackawanna County to bring us the details on holiday travel as you're hitting the road.
According to AAA ninety percent of Americans are going to be hitting the road because of low gas prices and the weather.
A new TripAdvisor survey has a few fun holiday statistics for us. Based on the survey 55 % of people are traveling to see family. The top places to travel to this year include trip to the city, a beach escape or a mountain getaway.
Listening to those Christmas tunes in the car? "White Christmas" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" top the travel list.
According to AAA, it's expected that 5.8 million Americans will choose to fly to their destinations this holiday, which is a point 7% increase from last year.
"Roughly 1 in 3 Americans are expected to travel this year. That's 100.5 million will be traveling 50 miles or more from home," said Nina Waskevich, the AAA Director of Marketing and Public Relations.
With lower gas prices, the traffic is expected to increase as well.
"There's extra income now to be able to travel more, gas, lower prices to fill up with your gas tank. About 90 % of American's will be traveling this year." Waskevich added.
