SCRANTON, Pa. -- Fire crews battled massive flames at a home in Scranton's south side Wednesday evening.

The fire broke out around 6 p.m. along the 800 block of Stafford Avenue.

Officials tell us the home was heavily damaged after flames started on the second floor of the home and spread to the third floor. Two people and a dog made it out of the home. There is no word on their conditions.

The assistant fire chief said the conditions outside made it difficult to fight the flames.

Fire officials say they had to battle the fire in shifts so they could keep warm.

"Everything is working against us today. Obviously, it's brutal, brutal weather conditions. It makes it more difficult to do what is already a difficult job," said Asst. Chief Jim Floryshak, Scranton Fire Department.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
