BRIAR CREEK TOWNSHIP -- It's taken four years, but a popular pool in Columbia County is expected to finally reopen this summer.

People in the Berwick area gathered at the Maria Assunta Society Hall for a fundraiser for the Ber-Vaughn community pool to help raise money for the $1.7 million renovation.

The pool closed for the 2012 summer season and never reopened for the summers thereafter. But organizers plan to finally reopen the pool on June 4.

Back in 2014, Newswatch16 saw the pool filled with green water, home to ducks and tadpoles.

"It was a total gut job," said Matt Getty of the Berwick Area Swimming Pool Association. "All the plumbing in the pool was shot. [We] gutted the locker rooms, gutted the office, the concession stand--everything!"

And it's more than just some new pipes and changing the lightbulbs.

"We're adding a lot of features for kids," Getty added. "We're adding a ledge lounge where you can have lounge chairs in the water.

"Well as a kid, I went to the pool," said Connie Donlin. "I used to ride my bike to the pool and hang out there most of the day, then go home when the pool closed. Seeing the new pool revived into a new space is going to be really amazing."

Rocco Romeo came out to this pasta fundraiser as construction crews continue to get the pool ready in time for the summer.

"It's going to be a huge difference because there's not too many pools around and that's the only pool that's in Berwick," said Romeo.
