FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- A man shot at the end of a police pursuit in Carbon County Tuesday night has died, according to state police.

State police said the shooting happened following a chase that began in the borough of Beaver Meadows around 5 p.m. Tuesday. It ended on Route 209 between Lehighton and the entrance to the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

State police said one man in the car was hit by a single shot after a struggle with an officer involved in the chase. The coroner identified him as Danny Washington, 27, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Four men from Florida are behind bars in Carbon County in connection with the chase and shooting.

Creshaun Caldwell, 23; Cedric Cason, 39; Mitchell Knight, 27; and Tyrone Parker, 25; are charged with receiving stolen property after police found blank bank checks in the van they were in Tuesday night.

Authorities won't say which local police department the officer is with or why and how the officer's gun went off.

"The investigation is still ongoing and once that information is able to be released, it will be released," said Trooper Anthony Petroski.

Police tried to stop the vehicle for a traffic violation on Route 93 near Beaver Meadows when the driver took off.

The chase ended after about 17 miles on Route 209 between Lehighton and the entrance to the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

"Multiple commands were given for the individuals to exit the vehicle. They refused to exit, the police officers enclosed on the vehicle. At which point a struggle ensued between the municipal police officer and an occupant in the vehicle. At that point, the municipal police officer's service weapon discharged, striking an occupant in the vehicle," Trooper Petroski explained.

"I saw a white van just fly down and then like five different police officers behind him and they made a left at the light and I guess they caught him at the bridge because that is where everything stopped," Jose Santiago said.

According to court papers, after the chase ended, police searched areas of Route 93 and that is where they found 11 blank checks that were reported stolen.

"There are a lot of moving parts to this investigation, and we want to make sure we give it the attention it deserves," Trooper Petroski said.

There is no word from investigators if the four men face additional charges.
