JIM THORPE -- Classes were cut short on Tuesday at Jim Thorpe Area School District as a precaution due to snow moving into the area.

When high school students were dismissed from school it wasn't snowing yet. Students say it was a good decision from the district to dismiss early.

"It happens because at the mountain it tends to be worse than it is here in town. Even though it's not snowing and it's not that bad down here, it can be way worse up there," Alexis Hill said.

Alexis Hill and Christian Gould say they understand why the school made the decision to dismiss early.

"It does seem a little ridiculous because we're down here, but you know, I'm kind of worried about people that have houses up there," Gould said.

In a normal February, you wouldn't see much grass in Carbon County. This winter has proven to be anything but normal.

So far this school year, the Jim Thorpe Area School District superintendent says they have only had two dismissals or delays this winter season. The superintendent told Newswatch 16 last year there were between 18 to 20 delays and dismissals along with at least nine snow days.

This school year there have been no snow days, and it's almost mid-February.

"We had a lot of snow days, but this year not that much," one student said.

If you ask any high school student, fewer snow days beats having class until mid June like last year.

Most kids getting out early didn't mind.

"It's alright, but if we got out late in the summer I don't like it," Cameron Boger said.

School districts throughout Carbon, Monroe, and Schuylkill Counties also dismissed school early.
