DANVILLE -- Crews responded to a deadly fire in Montour County.

Fire officials said the fire started around 1:30 p.m. Monday in the home on Cross Street in Danville.

According to authorities, Eugene Yohn, 88, was killed when fire broke out in the home.

Yohn's wife, Doris, was also home at the time and made it out safely.

Investigators believe the fire started on the side porch of the house which is where the victim and his wife kept several oxygen tanks.

The Montour County coroner said Yohn had several health problems, including bad eyesight, which may have prevented him from getting out of his house.

Family members say Yohn was a retired truck driver. Neighbors say he was very respected and loved in this community. Word spread quickly around the tight-knit community.

"Anytime that I've gone to school or worked or gone past, Eugene was always doing yard work and such.  I just go over and see if I can help out or anything,” said neighbor Haleigh Allen.

"When I seen Doris down there I cried.  She's not in the best shape herself.  He can't see very good,” said neighbor Alice Bialecki.

Three state police fire marshals are investigating what caused the fire.  Investigators believe it started on the enclosed side porch where the couple kept oxygen tanks, but they say there is too much damage to determine an exact cause.
