WILLIAMSPORT -- A food bank in central Pennsylvania is serving up a much more rounded diet thanks to a new cooler that can store all sorts of fresh produce.

The Central PA Food Bank is in the business of helping thousands of people throughout the region.

Deliveries such as the one to the Williamsport Elderly Housing apartments typically consist of canned food and non-perishables.

These days, however, there is something colorful and fresh in the mix.

"Last month they brought us in cauliflower and potatoes, it was really wonderful," said Lela Yoder, a resident at the high-rise apartments.

The residents can now supplement their diets with fruits and vegetables from the food bank, the kind of food that does not come cheap.

"Everybody here is on a very fixed and limited income, and so they really have to watch their pennies and pinch their pennies," said Lynne Thompson, social services director for the Williamsport Elderly Housing apartments.

Central PA Food Bank branch director Jamie Caputo showed Newswatch 16 what is making the new fresh produce offerings possible: a new 25 by 40 foot cooler.

"Fresh produce and fresh products are more expensive. This is an investment that the food bank is making into our communities into the health of our communities," said Caputo.

So thanks to the bigger, better cooler, folks who rely on the Central PA Food Bank can count on not only getting food, but getting food that's better for them.

"Since they have the new storage unit, they can bring in more fresh fruits and stuff to us, and we really appreciate it," added Yoder.
