Nearly two dozen dogs taken from a kennel in Sullivan County are now in need of new places to call home.
The dogs were taken last week from a property near Dushore. A few ended up at the Luzerne County SPCA near Wilkes-Barre. But, more than 20 dogs were taken to the Dessin Animal Shelter near Honesdale.
Many of the dogs now at the shelter in Wayne County are Jack Russell Terrier puppies. They seem happy even though shelter officials say they came from a rough home.
"The puppies are very parasitic, wormy looking," says Susan Frisch of the Dessin Animal Shelter. "Kind of a pot-bellied appearance that they get. The parents are in decent weight. There were other dogs found dead on the site that hadn't been as lucky as the ones we have here."
Because the owner of the kennel in Sullivan County surrendered the dogs, once they're healthy enough or old enough, they'll be ready for adoption.
"Absolutely. We're accepting applications now for them," says Frisch. "The ones that are in the building are available for adoption. Once we can get them processed for their spay surgeries, they'll be ready to go home."
The owner of the dogs told Newswatch 16 that her kennel operation simply got too big to control. So far, there's no word on any charges against her.
If you would like to help the animals at the Dessin Animal Shelter near Honesdale, call (570) 253-4037.
