More people are turning to food pantries due to the tough economic climate and in Union County, churches are joining together to stop hunger.
Reverend Alice Rauch of Emmanuel United Church of Christ got help Monday bringing in food for the New Berlin Area Food Pantry in Union County.
"The need continued to be a reality and even greater so we found a way to put our energies together and really respond to what we see as hunger," said Reverend Rauch.
Her church, along with three others: Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church, Emmanuel United Methodist and Windward Ministries, have joined together to create the New Berlin Area Food Pantry.
The group said as the economy took a downward turn, the need in the community started to grow.
"Well we don't have a food pantry and we did hear, especially when gas prices were so high, people didn't know what to do. They lost their job and didn't have enough money for gas. So they couldn't drive to Mifflinburg or Lewisburg and they were stuck," said Pastor Andrew Fitch of Messian Lutheran Church.
"We've worked together in the past and continue to work together but it has really made us see ourselves as a team in this effort," Pastor Rauch added.
The churches are asking for people to donate any non-perishable items or money to help those in need. The group also needs shelves to store the food and volunteers to help run the pantry.
"We want to make sure children and adults have food when the are hungry but also I think we want to a growing sense of community caring in New Berlin,"s aid Pastor Rodger Peters of Emmanuel United Methodist Church.
The churches will start giving away food in April. If anyone is in need the group asks you contact any of the four churches involved.
