A store run by a battered womens shelter in Schuylkill County is open again after being closed since the first of the year.

With Mother's Day approaching, those who operate the Grateful Thread Store in downtown Pottsville thought they could have a good run of business. The store has been closed since the first of the year, in part due to the sluggish economy. The store is run by Schuylkill County Women in Crises and money made at the story goes to its shelter for battered woman.

"As the economy has worsened the options for women getting out has also become much more challenging so we really need the additional resources that come from this to help us with the critical services that we do," said director Sally Casey.

The store had steady flow of customers, picking up this and that for mom's special day. Many said they would like to see the store open for more than special occasions.

"I definatly would like to see them open they have a lot to offer a lot of very nice things," said Kim Freed of Orwigsburg.

"These are generally homemade items which are much better than commercial items and because it's a very important organization. I think it should be kept open," said Sharon Krasnitski of Auburn.

Deb Bair agrees. She is a nurse and has seen the work Schuylkill County Women in Crises has done for victims. "We're in the health care field and we see a lot of women who are in this situation being in crises for whatever reason and we think it's important to support this anyway we can," said Bair said.

The store does produce special order handmade products, which can be purchased anytime.
