They opened the doors to a new store in Schuylkill County Thursday and officials there hope it's a sign the economy may be making a comeback.

People are always looking for bargains and they now have a new place to shop in Schuylkill County.

"Look for the good sales, I guess, and save what you can," said Cathy Holmen of Locustdale.

It's the first day of business at Famous Labels in the Schuylkill Mall near Frackville.

"Our owners are very good at selecting locations and this seemed to be a good place for our kind of business. We offer name brands at 70 percent off for clothing and in this economy it's a great deal," said Sharon Bledsoe of Famous Labels.

The Schuylkill Mall opened 29 years ago and sometimes it has struggled to keep its store fronts filled.

"This mall is probably too big for the market. It was built in the '80s when the real estate and the economy was very strong and developers were building projects that were too big," said leasing agent Jerry Johnson.

Officials said the mall is 70 percent filled but they hope to have the empty spaces filled very soon.

"We have four or five new tenants coming that are of similar quality and we believe for the long-term stability of the property we believe these tenants are a good fit," said mall owner Mike Earlstein.

Others believe that's a good sign and the economy may be at a turning point.

"We are pleased with the traffic count at the moment. The stores seem to be doing well despite the economy and seem to be holding their own," said mall manager Elaine Maneval.

Mall officials hope Famous Labels is successful and the business stays. That and a few more tenants will help the Schuylkill Mall in the long run.
