Some lawyers in Schuylkill County skipped the courtroom Friday and instead, rolled up their sleeves for a good cause.

Attorney Sud Patel and his son, Arjun, did some shopping in Orwigsburg Friday. It wasn't for them but for those who can't take care of themselves and need help.

Earlier Patel and other lawyers from the Schuylkill County Bar Association were busy loading a thousand cans of food into cars. Most of it will go to food pantries in the area.

"We have ability to help out a lot more people than the clients we serve," said Sud Patel.

Some of the food is going to the Pottsville-based Domestic Violence Shelter, allowing officials there to save money.

"That's always wonderful to have extra money to put to the other bills because as we all know there are bills all over the place," said Marie Canfield of Schuylkill Women in Crisis.

This is the second year for the food drive.

"We toured the facilities. We saw the bare cupboards. There are hundreds and hundreds of people that depend on these food banks to sustain their families," said Christina Hale of the Schuylkill County Bar Association.

Boyers Food Markets helped by donating some of the food.

"This makes me feel great because it's for people that are really in need that people don't really see," said Steve Toth of Boyers Food Markets.

Lawyers are proud of the food drive, in small part because it's something good when compared to the judicial bribe taking in neighboring Luzerne County.

"This is one small step that we're able to take to show the citizens of Schuylkill County and surrounding counties we as lawyers should not be painted with a broad brush as some of the few rogue judges in Luzerne County," Sud Patel added.

The food drive is also a lesson to the smallest helper, four-year-old Arjun Patel. He helped load food for those in need.
