The Lions Club in one part of Schuylkill County has come up with an unusual way to raise money. Folks who live in Minersville are being invaded by pink flamingos.
The plastic birds are springing up in yards all over the Minersville area. To get rid of the birds, people have to donate $12 to $30. Then the flamingos will be moved to the property of a friend or relative - with their permission, of course. The cycle then repeats.
"People send the flock to their friends, and in order to get rid of the flock, you have to send it somewhere else," explaind Bud Barnes of the Minersville Lions Club. "I guess it's like a continuing chain letter and we move them from residence to residence."
There is even a way to prevent the flock from ending up in your yard. For a $20 donation, you can buy insurance so your yard won't be flocked.
The flamingo idea was born at the Minersville Area Junior Senior High School by Rachael George. The money raised will go to the Minersville Public Library and to help pay to send students to other countries.
"So they can see there is life outside of Schuylkill County and bring that experience to the county," said Lions Club member Charles Moran.
The Lions Club says the flamingo fundraiser in Minersville will continue until everybody says they're tired of buying flamingos.
