The family of a man who fell to his death while helping to demolish a church in Schuylkill County spoke to Newswatch 16.
John Martz, 52, of Oneida died Monday. He was killed when he fell 50 feet from a lift at the demolition site of Saint George Catholic Church in Shenandoah. The coroner says Martz's safety harness was not hooked to the machine he was on. It's suspected a piece of granite tipped the bucket. A fellow worker, Anthony Webb, was saved by his safety harness.
Jason Martz is the victim' son.
"It's hard to deal with because you know that everybody is going to pass at one time or another, but you're never ready for it," he said. "It's hard to deal with."
The John Martz family says he was no stranger to heights and worked in high places on a lot of construction jobs.
"Just the fact that I'm never going to see him again, it's tough," sais son Jason. "Just think of the good times we had. Family time we had together with friends and family and focus on them."
John Martz leaves behind a family including four children.
"He was going to be a grandfather and, sadly, he's not going to be able to see that," Jason said. "It was something he was very excited about."
On Tuesday, inspectors from OSHA, the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, were in Shenandoah.
Newswatch 16 noted that demolition work at Saint George church had stopped. Federal inspectors say they did not order a halt to the work. A spokesman for the demolition company did not return our call.
