One teen is dead and his friend critically injured after a crash Monday night near Shenandoah.

A group of teens walked through the place Tuesday where one friend died and another was critically hurt while riding on a bicycle. They wondered if a sneaker found on the road belonged to either of the victims.

"He was one of my best friends. We're really going to miss him," said cousin Nate Guldon.

Ryan Stankavage, 14, died. His friend, Damien Layton, who was a passenger on his bike, was critically hurt when a mini-van crashed into the bike. The boys hit the hood and the windshield before being thrown to the road. The driver was a woman from Shenandoah.

According to the coroner, the teens were riding a bike going from Shenandoah toward William Penn when the crash happened. The coroner said they were in the middle of the road.

"We seen cops and ambulances coming down and I texted Damien and said, 'What did you and Ryan do?' He never texted me back. He always texts me back and I knew something was wrong," said friend Sean Neagle.

"Of all the people, just him. He was an amazing kid and I can't believe he got it," said friend Erinque Aguilar.

The victim's friends now know that life can change in an instant.

"It's just like blank, there is nothing in there," said Sean Neagle.

The tragedy is a reminder to the teens that bike safety is important.

"Usually we bike in one spot, usually we don't go far at night," Neagle added.

"I don't want to ride my bike now," said Jacob Silva," because my friends got hit and I just have a bad feeling."

News that two teens were hit rippled through the community causing some anxious moments for some. "Right away alarms went off because right away I thought about my two boys because they're always on the bikes with the two boys who were here yesterday so I ran and I saw some friends of Jacob and Josh and I said, 'Tell me it's not Jacob and Josh' and they said, 'No. It's Ryan and Damien.' It's horrible," said Bonnie Silva.

This is not the first time tragedy has hit Damien Layton's family. "Everything is going through my mind. I had an older son that got hit by a car in Brandonville and it's just," Damien's mother Susan Layton, said tearfully. She was unable to complete her thought.

The Layton family feels for the Stankavage family and hopes Damien pulls through.

"He's going to have problems the rest of his life now. I just feel real sorry for Ryan's mom. Her son (Susan Layton) is going to live and Ryan's mom doesn't have a son," said Layton family friend Mike Segura. The coroner said the crash is an unfortunate accident. Some said the teens were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
