If you support clean, renewable energy, here's a chance for you to pay up.

PPL Electric Utilities wants to give customers the option to contribute energy projects that support the environment.

Ryan Hill from PPL came by the station in Moosic to explain why this new option came about.

"There are folks out there that are passionate about this and this gives them an opportunity that they didn't have before," Hill explained.

That opportunity is that customers can voluntarily pay more each month on their electric bill. The extra money goes to support renewable energy projects.

It costs about $2 a month and it's completely up to the customer to decide whether or not to pay it. That money will be used for eco-friendly projects, like windmills.

"We've heard from our customers over the years. Customers calling our contact center asking, "Is there a way I can support renewable energy?' 'Do you have a green power option?'" Hill said.

Hill says the Green Power Option all happened in response to customers' interests. Some people we talked to at Nay Aug Park in Scranton had some reservations.

"Being retired, you've got to watch every penny you got. It's not like you're working and, plus an extra job. I'm just retired, that's it. I'm not doing nothing," Tom Mulholland from Scranton explained.

"All of our electric and everything is going up so high. I don't know if people would agree to spending two more dollars," Wendy Evans from Scranton said.

Others were more optomistic.

"I would try it. I would try it, if it would help with the electric, the bill and stuff I would try it," Barbara Nole from Dunmore said.

Ryan Hill says PPL will not profit from this option. He also says signing up is not a long-term commitment. Customers can leave any time they choose.
