An apartment house in Sunbury caught fire Thursday night.

Fire broke out at an apartment house on Spruce Street around 6:30 p.m. The fire chief tells Newswatch 16 at least six people lived in the building.

Luann Dusangis lives across the street.

"I was sitting in my room and I was, like, 'Oh my word! What's going on?' And it was fast, really fast," said Dusangis. "There was a lot of smoke coming out of the first floor door, and then, all of a sudden, it started to come out of the back. And it was awful."

Pictures sent to PhotoLink@ wnep.com showed flames coming from the roof. Everyone made it out safely. Both floors of the building sustained smoke and water damage. Companies from Selinsgrove and Northumberland assisted the Sunbury firefighters in tackling the blaze.

"We have a rehab unit from the Americus Hose Company and they're taking care of them, doing blood pressure checks, hot coffee, hot food. So, that helps," said Sunbury Fire Chief Dean Weirick.

According to state police, the fire started in the laundry area of one of the apartments. Investigators say there was a problem with the cord on a space heater that was being used to keep water lines from freezing.

The Red Cross is helping at least six people forced from their homes by the fire in Northumberland County.
