Changes are on the way for a school district in Montour County.
Starting next year the Danville Area School District will be consolidating elementary schools.
For the first time students from four different elementary schools will be forced to share the same school.
Tiani Ritter owns Lutz Preschool in Mahoning Township. Ritter has children in elementary school and runs an after-school program for students. Ritter was at Tuesday's school board meeting when it was announced next year all third, fourth and fifth graders will be going to the same school. Ritter said she applauds the consolidation.
"I like the fact that there will be a nice mix of kids together. In communities like these you have cliches," Ritter said.
The Danville Area School District's consolidation project has been in the works for nearly four years. District officials said the plan calls for all third through fifth graders to go to Liberty Valley Elementary School. Kindergarten through second grade students will attend Danville Elementary, Mahoning Cooper and Riverside Elementary School.
Brian Hart has two elementary school aged children and said the change will force his young ones to travel a longer distance.
"A lot of the parents go to and back to school, back and forth every day. To have to travel to another school district out there is ludicrous," Hart said.
The second phase of the district's new plan is eliminating three of the four elementary schools and building a new elementary school.
The Danville High School baseball field is where the school board decided to build the new elementary school.
Ritter said she's concerned about transportation for her children after school.
"Last year we had a few situations with children that weren't on the right bus beginning of the year so obviously that is a concern that I have. There is probably more potential for that to happen this year," Ritter added.
The changes will start next school year.
The school's consolidation plan was discussed in the past but nothing was done. School officials were not available to discuss the new plans.
