A resort in the Poconos is opening its doors Wednesday night and offering a free community dinner to those in need.
The preparations were already underway Tuesday in the kitchen of the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort near Marshalls Creek.
"We are opening our doors to anyone in the community who feels they need a hearty, autumn meal in a time when I know things are tough for a lot of people," said resort owner Ginny Kirkwood.
She and her husband Charlie Kirkwood came up with idea of a free dinner after seeing the struggles many in the community are facing.
"People are hungry and my wife, Ginny, and I realize that. Fortunately having a hotel with a lot of people who are willing to help seemed like a pretty easy thing to decide to do, " said Charlie Kirkwood.
On Wednesday night the resort will welcome anyone in need to come and enjoy a free meal from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
If you don't have transportation the resort has teamed up with the Pocono Family YMCA to give free rides. Pick up is at 4:30 p.m. at the parking lot of the American Ribbon Factory in downtown Stroudsburg.
The community dinner is also being made possible by volunteers from the resort and also from the community.
"Everyone can still be able to give back and those of us who are fortunate enough to have the time and have the energy to be abe to give to this I think it is very important that we do so," said Jennifer Fuller, Director of Human Resources for Shawnee Inn who is volunteering.
"It's a community effort to just try and ease the burden for some folks who for no fault of their own it's a really tough time," added Ginny Kirkwood.
There is a second free meal also planned for Wednesday, November 11.
