A state police fire marshal is still investigating how a fire started at a historic home in Monroe County Wednesday night.

Neighbors in the Poconos said it is a big loss. Ruben Reeves and his wife, Mary Kate, still can't believe their Buck Hill Falls community near Mountainhome lost a historic home.

"It's a tragic thing because of its historic significance." said Fred Ruben. "It was a surprise and shock."

"It's really tragic what happened," Mary Kate Reeves said. "This community was settled in 1901. That's an original home, so it's at least 100 years old or so."

Nearly 24 hours after fire swallowed the home along Griscom Road, firefighters were back on scene dousing hot spots.

The fire chief said he believes the fire started under the porch, but he doesn't know how it started. The damage estimate is about $500,000.

Reeves and her husband didn't know the couple who lived there, but they remember a gorgeous mansion.

"It was several story, three stories with beautiful wood, it was a gorgeous home." Reeves said. "I'm sure the homeowners themselves are devastated, certainly the community will be behind them whatever they decide to do."

Neighbors said the woman who owns the house grew up there. A friend said she does have insurance.
