Police said the crash claimed two lives Thursday morning after the vehicles hit head-on.
Pocono Township police officers are still trying to figure out what caused the accident here on Route 611 in Tannersville.
They do know a Ford Focus driven by Stephanie Rivera, 19 of Pocono Summit, and an Isuzu Rodeo driven by George Binikos, 69, of Stroudsburg collided head on. Both drivers were killed.
Rivera's eight-year-old brother Tyler, survived the crash. The coroner said the boy is in stable condition after having surgery.
Stacy Ems lives nearby and said traffic has increased on Route 611 in the past year or two.
"I've lived here for 20 years and I've seen more traffic than ever before. People are always flying around here. Sometimes it takes 10 minutes to get to one stoplight," Ems said.
Police closed the road for several hours while police investigated the accident. A lot of people said this is a dangerous road with lots of speeding, but the woman who lives down the street from the accident said she really doesn't see too many problems.
"I sit out here with my kids, and no, nothing really. You know, this is actually shocking to me seeing all this," said Heather Rak.
According to PennDOT, there have been 31 crashes on that stretch of Route 611 from 2004 to 2008. One of those crashes was fatal.
Stacy Ems hopes people will be safe on Route 611, so there aren't any more accidents like this one.
Police officers said all three people were wearing seatbelts.
Investigators said an eyewitness told them the Ford Focus driven by Rivera drifted into opposing traffic. Investigators are still trying to figure out if that's actually what happened.
"It's crazy. It's getting bad," Ems added.
