Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs near Wilkes-Barre is one step closer to getting table games.

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board gave its approval Tuesday to Mohegan Sun's request for table games.

Rob Bohr of Olyphant is excited about the news. "I think there will be a lot more people coming in to the casino now. A lot of our friends won't come because it's just slot machines," said Bohr.

The casino's president Robert Soper testified before the board in Harrisburg.

"We were expecting it. There was a little hint of relief from it that we were able to clear this hurdle but there's still a ways to go," said Soper.

Last week Newswatch 16 got a look at dealer school. The casino is training the hundreds of new workers it will need to handle the table games. They will serve gamblers who try their hand at games such as blackjack, craps and poker.

"I would probably try it. If they brought them here, I would try them because I really don't like the machines, so I'd probably give it a shot," said Michelle Marcheso of New Jersey.

The casino still needs to meet several criteria, such as having enough security and having policies and procedures for the table games. The games are expected to create almost 600 new jobs and generate more than $6 million in revenue.

"I think there's a lot of excitement that the training school is up and we are creating new jobs and, hopefully, by early summer we will be rolling out the games," said Soper.

A spokesperson for the gaming control board said it is doing background checks on the people the casino is hiring.

If state gaming officials give the final approval, Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs will soon be one of the first casinos in the state to have table games.
