An emotional vigil Friday brought out hundreds of people to honor Freeland Mayor Tim Martin.

Family, friends, and a community packed Freeland Public Park for a candlelight vigil, remembering Mayor Martin who died of cancer Thursday night.

They shared emotions. "Tim was a friend, he was a husband, a stepfather, more importantly, he was the people's mayor," said Kristen Buczynski.

Martin was in his third term as mayor and also served several years on Freeland Borough Council. Many said he was much more than a good leader.

"It's really hard. He was a great man. He cared so much for the community. He never passed you by. He always had words to say to you," said Heather Hannisick of Freeland.

The community talked about what a great man he was.

"He's always done so much for everybody and he's always been a friend to everybody and that's a great loss," said John Reynolds of Freeland.

"It's overwhelming the love that the town showed for Tim, and everybody just thought so much of him," Dave Digon of Freeland.

Martin's Mission is a fundraiser in honor of Mayor Tim Martin. The vigil was part of the fundraiser for Martin's Mission, and all the money raised will go to cancer research, the Martin family, and special needs children.

This fundraising event, Martin's mission, at Freeland Park will continue Saturday. Organizers said so far they've raised more than $6,000.

A viewing for Tim Martin will take place Sunday at Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Parish in Freeland. A funeral service will follow at the church on Monday at 10 a.m. It is open to the public.
