Police in Luzerne County have charged a suspect in connection with a shooting that left a teenager hospitalized.
John Krantz Junior, 25, of Exeter surrendered to police on Thursday afternoon. He was later charged with a weapons violation and taken to the Luzerne County Prison.
Police began searching for Krantz following a shooting Wednesday night at an apartment complex along Schooley Avenue in Exeter. Crews arrived to find a 16-year-old boy bleeding from a gunshot wound. They said he was shot just below the throat.
"We believe it was an accidental shooting that occurred," said Exeter Police Chief John McNeil.
According to court papers, Krantz and the teen were hanging out Wednesday night. Krantz admits he had a handgun tucked into the waistband of his pants. Krantz told police that as he and the teen were "dancing around," the gun started to slip. Krantz grabbed it and pulled it out, and that's when he says the gun went off.
Krantz told police that he ditched the gun outside one of the apartments. He later led police to the gun and told them that the serial number had been ground off.
As for the teen who was shot, police said he has had surgery and was last in stable condition and expected to recover.
