A father in Luzerne County is upset after hearing what he calls offensive and violent language coming from his four-year-old son's toy.
It's the "Sing With Elmo's Greatest Hits" toy.
Chris Rothrock said he bought the Elmo toy for his four-year-old son, Dylan on Saturday night. He said Dylan loves Elmo and the "Sing With Elmo's Greatest Hits" toy was a birthday present.
One of the songs Elmo sings is "Shout!" and when Rothrock heard it, he was shocked. "He says 'Beat up Elmo and rip his fur out' and now my son's sad he can't play with his Elmo," said Rothrock.
Fisher-Price, the company that manufactures the Elmo toy, based on the Sesame Street character, said it stands by the product. In a statement, a company spokesperson wrote, "Fisher-Price stands by the Sing With Elmo's Greatest Hits product and assures consumers that the content is child-appropriate. We carefully write, review, and record songs and lyrics for our toys to ensure they are suitable for children in the appropriate age ranges. The lyrics and music for the Sing With Elmo's Greatest Hits product are recorded in one master file that is carefully reviewed and approved for quality assurance purposes before it is mass produced for the toy."
Fisher-Price also included the lyrics for the sing with Elmo's "Shout!" song that have the lyrics in question written as, "Be like Elmo and Shout! Shake your fur out and shout!" not "Beat up Elmo and Shout! Rip your fur out and Shout" as Rothrock said he heard.
For Rothrock, the toy was more than just a birthday present for his son. "Elmo's an icon. You wouldn't hear about Big Bird ripping out feathers and think it's funny," said Rothrock.
Rothrock said he also spoke with a representative from Fisher-Price and the company is sending him a refund for the toy.
