Some volunteers spent their weekend cleaning up what they call a messy cemetery in Lackawanna County.

By mowing the lawns, trimming the trees and uprighting flags, they were doing what they could to tidy up the Washburn Street Cemetery in west Scranton.

Shirley Theobald of Moscow is leading the effort. Her son is buried there and she said the place is a mess.

"It's in really deplorable shape and it needs someone to take care of it, and no one wants to assume the responsibility," said Theobald. "If I have to come back every weekend between now and whenever I get it done, I will do so and when it's done, I will come once a week to keep it done."

Theobald spread the word that she and some family and friends will be here on weekends this fall cleaning up. The owner of a lawn service heard about it.

"If the groundskeepers can't keep up on it, I figure I'll come down and give them a hand with it. Doesn't cost that much," said Henry Trapp of Hurricane Lawn Care.

It all drew the attention of neighbors too.

"It's great because there's nobody that does that. People across the street here; nobody's coming over to do it. Now we finally have a lot of people willing to volunteer," said Sherrie Lewis.

The cemetery is full of veterans' graves. Th3ose doing the cleaning say it's time those buried here get more respect.

"To see all the vets that are not being taken care of, that's what really got my attention," said Dave Wagner.
