PennDOT is warning drivers to slow down in construction zones or face serious consequences.

The construction season is getting underway in our area and PennDOT used a big Interstate 81 bridge project as a backdrop to remind drivers to stay safe as they travel through work zones.

This year, PennDOT said, it will have nearly $3 billion in highway and bridge projects. That means more work zones across the state than ever before.

Workers at a bridge project along the interstate between the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport/Avoca exit (178) and the Moosic exit(180) talked about the road hazards they see everyday; speeding drivers, people using cell phones and other distractions in the car.

Those who make their living out on the highway are asking drivers to slow down and be safe during this long season of road work.

PennDOT and the state police remind drivers that if they are driving more than 11 miles per hour over the speed limit in a work zone and they crash, they will automatically lose their license for 15 days.

That law also doubles fines for speeding and DUI if caught in an active work zone.

"The signs and everything approaching the projects, they're not just for our safety, they're for your safety too. Driving through we'd appreciate if you pay attention to the speed limit. Also pay attention to where you're driving, don't worry about what's happening to your right or left," said Jeff Miller of PennDOT.

Workers having been using a police arrest report form. It's a way for workers in work zones on the highway to take down information about aggressive and reckless drivers.

That form is then given to police who can cite the driver.

Last year every driver cited with one of the forms in northeastern Pennsylvania either pleaded guilty or was found guilty.

It's all meant to keep everyone safe on the highway.
