Kirby Park in Wilkes Barre will have a new look by the beginning of summer. Over the next few months, city crews plan to give the park a major overhaul.
Call it a facelift for the city's largest park. City D.P.W. and Parks and Recreation crews started working on a half-million dollar renovation at Kirby Park. The first improvement; repaving the park access road and parking lot. Next on the agenda; cleaning up the grounds and replacing old playground equipment.
That's good news for park regulars Laurie Marcin and her son. "We could use a lot of different toys for him. Different playgrounds and playground equipment. More swings. That will be great," said Marcin.
Another big change people will see at Kirby Park, no more rent-a-johns. Instead, the city plans to use a building to make two restrooms; one for men and one for women that will be open all the time. Plus, the city will make larger ones with multiple stalls that will be open during special events.
"I think it's really great. I think it's upscale for the people that come down here. It's a nice venue especially for the youngsters. We're very fortunate to have a park like this in this area," said Jim Paley of Forty Fort.
Even the walking and running track at the park will get an upgrade. Kathy from Wilkes Barre likes that. "Well I'll come back no matter what but if it's news and improved I'll definitely be here,"she said.
The mayor insists it's a needed cosmetic boost, and well worth it. "Kirby Park is one of the biggest assets in the city. And so we'll do Kirby this year and next year we'll do Coal Street Park the same way," said Mayor Tom McGroarty.
The mayor promises the park's new look will be ready for the annual the Fourth of July fireworks.
